Summary

  • Default-construct optional-only types in C++17 read-only mode.
  • Keep required-member constructors available, including Any(DataType const&, DataValue const&).
  • Allow copy construction for read-only generated types so owned members can be initialized safely across schema boundaries; keep copy assignment and move operations disabled.
  • Add API assertions for DataValue, Any, and the read-only copy policy.

Validation

  • Rebuilt XSC with make -B -j8 -C XSC xsc.
  • Forced regeneration and rebuilt all XSC tests with make -B -j8 -C Tests.
  • Full test build completed successfully.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Generated C++17 constructors can omit optional elements and attributes, including repeated elements.
    • Copy construction is supported for eligible read-only data types.
    • Default-construction availability now reflects required and optional members.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for optional-value arguments, construction, and copyability across generated data types.
    • Added XML utilities runtime coverage for parsing, writing, conversions, and error handling.
  • Documentation
    • Added instructions for building and running the test suite locally.

Walkthrough

The C++ backend detects optional members and generates C++17 constructor arguments and initialization for them. Read-only generated types can receive copy constructors when their members permit copying. The test suite adds generated API checks, XMLUtils runtime coverage, and shared test-runner integration.

Changes

C++17 construction and copying

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional-member detection and declarations
XSC/be/CXX/Elements.hpp, XSC/be/CXX/Header.cpp
The backend detects optional elements and attributes in complex types and their bases. C++17 headers declare optional constructor arguments and the XSCRT::OptionalArg<T> wrapper. Constructor declarations account for required and optional members. Read-only copy constructors are defaulted when no required copy members exist.
Optional argument generation and initialization
XSC/be/CXX/Inline.cpp
The generator emits required and optional constructor arguments in separate passes. Generated constructors initialize optional elements and attributes from supplied values or leave them absent.
Generated API tests and fixtures
Tests/DanceX11/*, Tests/ReadOnly/*, .gitignore
Tests check optional argument construction and read-only copyability. Read-only schemas and the enum fixture cover optional attributes and generated constructors. Ignore rules cover generated outputs.

XML utilities test integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
XMLUtils runtime coverage
Tests/XMLUtils/*
The new runtime test checks XML string operations, DOM parsing and writing, generated document reading, numeric conversion errors, parser errors, resolver errors, and type traversal. The test project generates schema types and builds the runtime executable.
Test runner integration
.github/workflows/linux.yml, Tests/Tests.mwc, Tests/run_test.lst, Tests/README.md
The workspace includes XMLUtils. The shared test list includes its driver, and the Linux workflow runs the listed XSC tests. The README describes local test setup and execution.

The generator changes look sound, but the new XMLUtils runtime test is likely to crash or fail in CI, and it cannot link because the ACE XML utilities library is never built. The README setup step also points at a script that does not exist. Fix the test and workspace before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Traverse optional members of complex bases.

For a base with an optional attribute and a derived type with no members, this dispatch reaches the inherited Traversal::Complex implementation, which has no registered edge traversers. The header therefore declares Derived() without the inherited argument. Inline.cpp traverses the base differently and emits that argument in the definition, so the generated C++ does not compile. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a complex-type traversal that preserves the comma state. Also align the recursive required and optional passes in Inline.cpp.

Do not forward an undeclared argument for a simple base.

Do not copy XSCRT::XML::string with its current ownership implementation.

ACE's XSCRT::XML::string owns s_ through a raw pointer and deletes it in its destructor. It defines no deep-copy or move operation. These statements copy the pointer; moved, assigned, copy, and value then delete the same allocation when the block ends. The copyability assertions do not detect this ownership error. Use a deep-copy implementation in the dependency before running this test, or remove the unsafe copy operations. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Skip non-element nodes before calling next_element().

The first child added to root is a text node. ACE's Parser::more_elements() counts that node, but next_element() casts it to DOMElement; constructing Element<char> from the null cast dereferences it. Select the child element explicitly, or change the parser to skip non-element nodes before this assertion. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Align the numeric rejection tests with the parser implementation.

ACE's FundamentalType<int> extracts a number with operator>> and does not check for trailing characters. It therefore accepts "12junk" as 12 without throwing, and the assertion at Line 113 fails. The negative-unsigned and signed-byte checks below also require validation absent from the inspected FundamentalType implementation. Add that validation before making these rejection assertions part of the runtime suite. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not call create_dom() after terminating its parser.

ACE's terminate_parser() clears impl_. Its two-argument create_dom() then dereferences impl_ without throwing std::logic_error. This test can crash before it reaches uninitialized_rejected. Add the initialization check to XML_Helper before testing that exception contract. The later one-argument create_dom() check also needs its own initialization guard. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fix the resolver-failure assertion. ACE's init_parser() returns instead of rethrowing.

XML_Helper<FailingResolver> does not throw from its constructor. init_parser() catches the std::runtime_error in a catch (...) handler and returns. initialized_ stays false. The test's catch (std::runtime_error const&) never runs, so initialization_error_propagated stays false and the assertion fails.

Choose one of these fixes:

  • Keep ACE's current contract. Change the test to assert that the helper is not initialized.
  • Require propagation. Change ACE's init_parser() to rethrow from the catch (...) handler, and clean up partial state. This change belongs in ACE, not this repository.
