Keep surviving collection sources usable through rollback, settle worker startup failures, discard stale thumbnail results, and avoid repeated metadata scans. Preserve rendering selectors and wait for completed views in browser tests.
Require zero-based slice mappings while preserving sparse slots. Normalize the standalone consumer guard path, document worker hosting, and remove the redundant shared-worker GDCM preload.

DICOM files and URLs now share a metadata-first loading pipeline with progressive whole-instance decoding. Plan collections consistently across batch and incremental imports, splitting incompatible acquisitions and pixel geometries while preserving stable identities, reconstruction details and session provenance.
Extract the reusable browser pipeline into private
packages/dicomcore and vtk entry points. Core owns sources, structured metadata, collection planning and typed pixel decoding; the vtk consumer owns image allocation, pixel writes, rendering updates and cleanup. VolView retains its stores, UI and import transactions, while the package shares the existing root tooling and provides standalone JavaScript and declaration builds.Configure worker/WASM assets explicitly, recover decoding after worker startup failures, and reconcile source disposal with rollback and deletion. Discard stale thumbnail results and keep sparse slice mappings anchored at slot zero.
Depends on #993.
