![A stack of five stones on a beach at sunrise, with 1.0 carved into the bottom stone](/blog-assets/tanstack-ai-1-0/header.png)

Less than a year ago, TanStack AI was a `chat()` function, four providers, and one promise: no lock-in, ever.

Today it is 1.0. All 76 packages go stable together. Your provider, your framework, your sandbox, and the wire protocol between them are still yours to pick. The promise held.
Today we're shipping 1.0, with stable core APIs and a new experimental agent harness. Your provider, your framework, your sandbox, and the wire protocol between them are still yours to pick. The promise held.

A lot happened between [the alpha](/blog/tanstack-ai-alpha-your-ai-your-way) and today. That `chat()` function grew into a toolkit for chat, tools, media, MCP, persistence, sandboxes, and agents, with 23 provider adapters and eight UI frameworks. More than 140 people helped build it.

This post covers what 1.0 means, what landed since [the RC](/blog/tanstack-ai-rc), how to upgrade, and one more thing that we could not wait to show you.
We want you to be able to build the AI experience you actually want, whether that's a feature in an existing app, a product of your own, or a framework other people build on. That goes for developers writing every line themselves and people who'd rather tell a coding agent what they want to build.

Chat is one place to start, but it doesn't have to be the whole app. Put image generation in an editor, use voice as the interface, or build an agent that keeps working while you do something else. The pieces should grow with what you're building.

## What 1.0 Means

1.0 is our formal commitment to the APIs you build on.

Everything in the 76 packages is stable and ready for production.
The core APIs are stable and ready for production. The new harness APIs are experimental.

And here is the good news if you already run TanStack AI: **1.0 has no new concepts.** We removed every API that 0.x marked as deprecated, and every replacement already shipped in 0.x. If you kept up with the deprecation warnings, you are most of the way there.
And here's the good news if you already run TanStack AI: **1.0 has no new concepts.** We removed every API that 0.x marked as deprecated, and every replacement already shipped in 0.x. If you kept up with the deprecation warnings, you're most of the way there.

Two things to know:

- **Upgrade everything together.** A 1.0 client needs a 1.0 server, so move every `@tanstack/ai*` package at the same time.
- **Upgrade everything together.** A 1.0 client needs a 1.0 server, so move your stable `@tanstack/ai*` packages at the same time. The experimental harness packages stay on 0.x.
- **The new agent harness is the one exception.** Its APIs are experimental. More on that at the end.

Testing grew with it. At Beta, we ran 265 deterministic end-to-end tests across 10 providers on every pull request. The 1.0 branch runs 943 of them across 17 provider adapters.
Our end-to-end tests run on every pull request, checking provider adapters and tool execution flows against deterministic model fixtures, without live API calls.

## What Landed Since the RC

The RC locked the architecture. It did not slow us down. Since then, we merged more than 100 feature pull requests. These are the highlights.

Portable Agent Skills (SKILL.md) as a first-class `chat()` middleware for TanStack AI

`withSkills` renders a short catalog of the skills you offer into the system prompt and gives the model a `load_skill` tool. The model reads the catalog, picks a skill, and pulls the full instructions only when it needs them — so a large skill library does not tax every request. This is the portable path: it runs on any tool-calling model, with no provider sandbox. For skills that run in a provider's own sandbox, see Provider Skills; the two do not mix in one call.

## Installation

    npm install @tanstack/ai-skills
    # or
    pnpm add @tanstack/ai-skills
    # or
    yarn add @tanstack/ai-skills
Pair with `skillsCatalogPlugin` from `/node` in your Vite config
Your own `SkillSource`  | —  | Skills in S3, a database, a registry

`aggregate`, `dedupe`, `filter`, `cache`, and `combineSources` compose these.

### Writing your own source

Implement the `SkillSource` contract, then prove it with the conformance suite the package ships:

    import { runSkillSourceConformance } from '@tanstack/ai-skills/testing'
    import { s3Skills } from './s3-skills'

    runSkillSourceConformance(() => s3Skills(makeTestBucket()), 's3')

It checks the things that break in production: a missing skill throws rather than returning empty, resources load while a path like `../../etc/passwd` is rejected, `revision()` is stable across identical content, and concurrent `list()` calls stay consistent. The optional parts of the contract are only checked when you implement them — the resource cases need both `listResources` and `readResource`, and the revision case needs `revision` — so a source that cannot represent them is skipped rather than failed. `vitest` is an optional peer dependency for this entry point.

## Documentation

# @tanstack/ai-acp

Shared Agent Client Protocol (ACP) plumbing for TanStack AI harness adapters — the code that turns a coding-agent CLI (`grok`, `gemini --acp`, …) into a `chat()` backend inside a sandbox.

Most apps should use a harness package directly (`@tanstack/ai-grok-build`, …). Reach for `@tanstack/ai-acp` when:

  * you want to plug an ACP agent that has no dedicated adapter package into a sandbox — use `acpCompatible` (the `openaiCompatible` of harnesses), or
  * you are building or extending a harness adapter and need the transport, session, permission, and stream-translation layers in one place.

# TanStack AI — Core Concepts

TanStack AI is a type-safe, provider-agnostic AI SDK. Server-side functions live in `@tanstack/ai` and provider adapter packages. Client-side hooks live in framework packages (`@tanstack/ai-react`, `@tanstack/ai-solid`, etc.). Always import from the framework package on the client — never from `@tanstack/ai-client` directly (unless vanilla JS).
Give the model a catalog of SKILL.md skills | See `@tanstack/ai-skills` package skills

## Companion packages

Some capabilities live in their own package and ship their own skills. Install the package, then read its skills — do not guess the API from this file.

### `@tanstack/ai-persistence` — durable chat state

Makes a conversation survive a reload, a server restart, a second device, or a paused tool approval. It ships the store contracts (`MessageStore`, `RunStore`, `InterruptStore`, `MetadataStore`), the `withPersistence` / `withGenerationPersistence` middleware, `reconstructChat` for server-side hydrate, an in-memory reference backend, and a conformance testkit. Multi-instance locks are not in this package — `LockStore` / `withLocks` ship in `@tanstack/ai/locks`; see ai-core/locks. The `runs` store contract is typed against run lifecycle types (`RunStatus`, `RunRecord`, `RunStore`, `defineRunStore`, `InMemoryRunStore`), which ship in `@tanstack/ai` itself; see ai-core/middleware.

It does not ship a backend for your database — you implement the stores against Postgres, SQLite, D1, Mongo, or whatever you run, and the package's skills walk you through it (including Drizzle, Prisma, and Cloudflare recipes).

    pnpm add @tanstack/ai-persistence
    npx @tanstack/intent@latest install

The skills ship inside the package, so they only exist on disk once it is installed — the second command re-scans `node_modules` and wires them into the agent config. Until then the paths below resolve to nothing.

Entry point: `node_modules/@tanstack/ai-persistence/skills/ai-persistence/SKILL.md`

Need to...  | Read
--- | ---
Wire server-side chat history, runs, interrupts | ai-persistence/server/SKILL.md
Implement the store interfaces for your DB | ai-persistence/stores/SKILL.md
Write the adapter for the DB your app runs | ai-persistence/build-*-adapter/SKILL.md

Browser-side persistence is not in this package — it ships with the framework packages, so read ai-core/client-persistence instead.

### `@tanstack/ai-code-mode` — LLM code execution

See the `ai-code-mode` skill in that package.

### `@tanstack/ai-skills` — portable Agent Skills at runtime

Gives the model a library of `SKILL.md` skills it can load on demand, on any provider, via the `withSkills` middleware and a `load_skill` tool. Skills come from `inlineSkill`, `skillDirectory`, or a build-time bundle. This is the runtime feature for the model inside your app, not the coding-assistant skills this file is part of, and not the hosted `codeExecutionTool` / `shellTool` skills (those run in a provider sandbox).

    pnpm add @tanstack/ai-skills
    npx @tanstack/intent@latest install

## 0.5.3

### Patch Changes

  * #1236 `5dc4e1a` - Add `@tanstack/ai-skills`: portable Agent Skills (`SKILL.md`) as a first-class `chat()` middleware.

`withSkills(sources, options?)` renders a skill catalog and a `load_skill` tool so any tool-calling model can load skills on demand, on any provider, with no server sandbox. Skills come from `inlineSkill`, `skillDirectory` (`/node`), or a build-time `staticSkills` bundle, and compose via `aggregate`/`dedupe`/`filter`/`cache`. `createResourceTool` exposes a skill's bundled files through `read_skill_resource`, and `runSkillSourceConformance` (`/testing`) validates custom `SkillSource` adapters. The catalog renders as `<available_skills>` XML for Anthropic models and markdown for others; portable and hosted (native) skills refuse to combine in one call.

Core `@tanstack/ai` now exports `SkillLimitError`. The native factories throw it (or add validation): `codeExecutionTool` (`@tanstack/ai-anthropic`) frames its 8-skill cap, and `shellTool` (`@tanstack/openai-base`) now validates `skill_id` format instead of nothing. `@tanstack/ai-sandbox` reuses the shared skill-directory walk from `@tanstack/ai-skills`.
