Summary

Upgrades the auth stack to clear every auth-related advisory and fixes the issues found while reviewing backend/src/auth.

Dependencies

  • better-auth and @better-auth/passkey: 1.4.17 → 1.7.12 (backend + frontend)
  • hono: 4.11.7 → 4.13.13
  • Lockfile re-resolution also picks up patched kysely 0.29.7, @simplewebauthn/server 13.3.3 and defu 6.1.7
  • pnpm audit --prod now reports no advisories for better-auth, @better-auth/*, hono, kysely, @simplewebauthn/server or defu

Before upgrading, the most relevant findings were account takeover via OAuth auto-link to an unverified email (CVE-2026-53516, exploitable only when admin credentials are not configured) and ReDoS in the Hono CORS middleware applied to every route (CVE-2026-69207).

No schema migration is needed: the hand-written tables in 001-base-schema.ts already match what 1.7.12 expects, including the passkey table. Better Auth 1.7 validates the schema at init, so a fresh database was verified to sign up and sign in, and a deliberately broken schema was confirmed to be rejected.

Fixes

  • Stop logging the Set-Cookie header on sign-in and cookie names in the auth middleware, both of which leaked session tokens into debug logs
  • Match ADMIN_EMAIL case-insensitively, since Better Auth stores lowercased emails
  • Revoke the admin's sessions when ADMIN_PASSWORD_RESET rotates the password, atomically with the password write
  • Remove the 5 minute session cookie cache. It served the signed cookie without reading the database, so a revoked session kept working until the cache expired: deleting every session row in a running container still returned 200 from /api/repos. Session state is now always authoritative, at the cost of one indexed SQLite read per authenticated request. A regression test fails if the cache returns
  • Require userVerification for passkeys instead of preferring it

Upgrade fallout

  • Hono 4.13 types c.req.param() as string | undefined; fixed in repo-git.ts and repo-terminal-socket.ts
  • Five createAuth tests now use the real SQLite harness (createAuthDatabase) because Better Auth 1.7 needs a dialect it can detect

Validation

Clean Linux checkout, pnpm install --frozen-lockfile:

  • pnpm typecheck: CLI, frontend and backend all pass
  • pnpm lint: 0 errors (41 pre-existing warnings)
  • Tests: CLI 503 pass, frontend 3264 pass, backend 3939 pass
    • 3 backend failures in session-sandbox ask for 8192 MiB on a host with 7.9 GiB; the service correctly rejects the request
  • pnpm build: CLI, backend and frontend build

Container built from this branch and started in production mode:

  • /api/health healthy with bundled OpenCode 2.0.15
  • Registration disabled when admin is configured; /api/repos and /api/settings return 401 without a session; cross-site POST returns 403
  • Mixed-case ADMIN_EMAIL signs in as [email protected] with a single user row
  • Passkey registration options report userVerification: "required"
  • Static frontend and hashed assets serve correctly; no Set-Cookie appears in the logs
  • ADMIN_PASSWORD_RESET leaves the old cookie unauthenticated and rejects the old password

Not included

Blocking sign-ups when ADMIN_EMAIL/ADMIN_PASSWORD are unset. Today registration is open and every account gets full access, which is what makes the OAuth auto-link advisory reachable; changing that alters who can create accounts, so it is left for a separate decision.

Better Auth also warns at startup that rate limiting cannot resolve a client IP behind the container proxy and falls back to one shared bucket per path. Fixing it needs advanced.ipAddress.ipAddressHeaders/trustedProxies configured to match the deployment, so it is left out of this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security

    • Passkey authentication now requires user verification.
    • Password resets immediately invalidate all active sessions, improving account security.
    • Administrative account matching now handles email addresses without regard to capitalization.
    • Authentication diagnostics no longer record cookie names, tokens, or response headers.
  • Reliability

    • Improved handling for deleted sessions, repository identifiers, and terminal connections.
    • Added safeguards to preserve consistent session and authentication behavior during administrative updates.

Upgrade better-auth and @better-auth/passkey to 1.7.12 and hono to
4.13.13, which clears every auth-related advisory in pnpm audit. The
lockfile also picks up patched kysely, @simplewebauthn/server and defu.

Drop the Set-Cookie and cookie-name logging that exposed session tokens,
match ADMIN_EMAIL case-insensitively, revoke admin sessions when
ADMIN_PASSWORD_RESET rotates the password, and require user verification
for passkeys.

📝 Walkthrough

Authentication behavior and dependencies changed, including passkey verification, authentication logging, and admin session handling. Repository ID parsing and missing terminal parameter handling also changed.

Changes: Authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Authentication dependencies and passkey configuration
backend/package.json, frontend/package.json, backend/src/auth/index.ts, backend/test/auth/index.test.ts
Authentication library versions were updated. Passkey user verification is now required. Authentication configuration tests use a local migrated in-memory database.
Authentication logging and admin synchronization
backend/src/auth/middleware.ts, backend/src/routes/auth.ts, backend/test/auth/middleware-same-site.test.ts, backend/test/routes/auth.test.ts
Authentication logs no longer include cookie details or sign-in response headers. Admin lookup compares email addresses without case sensitivity. Password resets update credentials and delete the admin’s sessions in a transaction. Tests cover logging, session preservation, session revocation, and rollback.

Route Parameter Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repository and terminal route parameters
backend/src/routes/repo-git.ts, backend/src/routes/repo-terminal-socket.ts
Repository ID parsing now uses Number.parseInt with radix 10. A missing terminal ptyID is converted to an empty string.

Deleting session rows did not end a session while the 5 minute cookie
cache served the signed cookie without reading the database, so an admin
password reset left the old session usable. Drop the cache so session
state is always authoritative, and cover revocation with a test.
