docs(eql): say what native jsonb functions do on the v4 JSON tree domains - #1444
EQL v4 stores an encrypted JSON document in a column of type public.eql_v4_json_search. That type is a PostgreSQL domain over jsonb, so PostgreSQL's own jsonb functions still accept the column, and run over the stored ciphertext envelope instead of the user's document. jsonb_path_match(col, …) returns false for every row, with no error.
This PR documents that, and pins it with tests. It no longer tries to block the functions. An earlier version of this PR added 40 overloads that made these calls raise. Review showed they cost more than they protect, and #1439 is rescoped to match:
They broke plain jsonb code across the whole database. With them installed, a call whose first argument has no type, such as jsonb_typeof('{}') or jsonb_each_text($1) from a driver that sends untyped parameters, failed with function … is not unique (SQLSTATE 42725). That included code that never touches an encrypted column.
They missed the usual way the mistake is written. PostgreSQL picks an overload only when every argument has a type, so jsonb_path_match(col, '$.a == 1') or jsonb_path_match(col, $1) still ran the native function and silently returned false.
No narrower overload exists. The overloads already took only the domain. The ambiguity comes from how PostgreSQL resolves an argument with no type, and a domain over jsonb accepts one exactly as jsonb does. A base type of its own would close the hole without overloads, but only a superuser can create one, and EQL installs without superuser.
Changes
Docs (packages/eql/docs/reference/json-tree-leakage.md): a new section, "Native jsonb functions read the envelope". Operators on the column are blocked (as before this PR). Functions are not: the jsonpath functions match nothing, extraction returns NULL for a document key and the envelope's own field for an envelope key (v is 4), and only the three array functions raise. The section lists what to query with instead, explains why EQL cannot block the functions, and gives col::jsonb as the deliberate way to read the envelope.
Tests (packages/eql/tests/encryption/tests/json_tree/native_functions.rs, a new module of the json_tree suite). Each test runs on a document sealed by Stack Encrypt under the fake key source, and on an entry extracted from it:
jsonb_extract_path(doc, 'hello') is NULL, jsonb_extract_path(doc, 'v') is 4, and jsonb_object_keys(doc) lists the envelope's keys;
the three array functions raise natively on both domains;
the guard: with EQL installed, untyped plain-jsonb calls still resolve to the native function (jsonb_typeof('{}'), a prepared jsonb_typeof($1) whose parameter resolves to jsonb), and no function in public overloads a native jsonb function. Re-adding a single overload fails this test with the 42725 error.
No SQL, no upgrade note and no changeset: the bundle does not change, and the JSON tree surface this documents has not been released.
This branch sits on next after #1455, which merged main into next.
On a throwaway PostgreSQL 15 with the v4 bundle built from this branch:
cargo test -p eql-encryption-tests --test json_tree native_functions -- --ignored: 4 passed. With one overload re-created by hand (public.jsonb_typeof(public.eql_v4_json_search)), the guard test fails with function jsonb_typeof(unknown) is not unique, as it should.
mise run test:doc-anchors and test:docs_v3_grep: passed.
Review notes
Operators still carry a cost of the same kind, and it ships today. The (jsonb, eql_v3_*) and (jsonb, eql_v4_*) operators that EQL installs make plain_jsonb_col @@ '<untyped jsonpath>' fail as operator is not unique. That happens with the released EQL v3 bundle as well as v4, whereas stock PostgreSQL returns the answer. This PR does not change it; it needs its own issue.
The section stays in the leakage reference because a native function on the column reads exactly the stored row's fields, which that page already lists. It reveals nothing new, but its answers are wrong, and that page is where a reader of the column's guarantees looks.
Merging this PR will not cause a version bump for any packages. If these changes should not result in a new version, you're good to go. If these changes should result in a version bump, you need to add a changeset.

Title check
The title accurately describes the documentation changes about native jsonb functions on v4 JSON tree domains, although the primary change also implements blockers and tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes beyond the literal function list of #1439 share the issue's bug class. Native jsonb functions accept the domain and run over the ciphertext envelope, which can return silently wrong results. The extra items are:
The _tz jsonpath forms. The PR states that they fail the same silent way.
Extraction and transform functions not named in the issue: jsonb_each_text, jsonb_typeof, jsonb_strip_nulls, jsonb_set, jsonb_insert, jsonb_pretty. Each one returns a wrong result on the envelope, for example jsonb_typeof returns the envelope type.
Supporting changes: the REQUIRE on json_tree/functions.sql (needed by the messages), the test file, the documentation section, the upgrade note U-004, and the patch changeset. All tie to the blocker work.
A side effect exists. Once the overloads are installed, an untyped first argument to any of the 20 functions on a plain jsonb call fails with 42725 (for example jsonb_typeof('{}')). This affects plain jsonb outside EQL columns. The PR discloses it, documents the ::jsonb cast fix in U-004, and pins it with a test. The side effect follows from the chosen blocker design. It does not show an unrelated change. The keep-or-drop decision for each overload remains with the owner, as the PR description states.
Evidence limit: the overload bodies were not read directly. The function list is taken from the change summary and the PR description, which agree.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issue #1439 is the only active direct target. Its requirements are coding requirements. Status by requirement:
[#1439] Function-form blockers for the jsonpath family (jsonb_path_exists, jsonb_path_match, jsonb_path_query, jsonb_path_query_array, jsonb_path_query_first) on eql_v4_json_search and eql_v4_json_entry. Met. blockers.sql adds 20 overloads per domain, including the _tz forms. Each raises feature_not_supported (0A000) and names the function and the EQL alternative.
[#1439] Function-form blockers for the extraction family (jsonb_extract_path, jsonb_extract_path_text, jsonb_each, jsonb_object_keys). Met on both domains.
[#1439] Blockers for jsonb_array_elements and jsonb_array_elements_text. Not met. The issue names both functions in the Problem section and in Proposal step 1. The PR leaves them unblocked, and also leaves jsonb_array_length unblocked. The native functions already raise a native error ("cannot extract elements from an object"). That error is not feature_not_supported (0A000). The issue asks for the 0A000 outcome. The PR gives a reasoned trade-off (plain-jsonb ambiguity for bulk loads). The issue owner has not accepted that trade-off in the issue text.
[#1439] Entry overloads where the native function accepts an entry (Proposal step 2). Met, for the same function set as item 1 and item 2.
[#1439] SQLx or encryption test that calls each blocked function and asserts 0A000 (Proposal step 3). Met for the implemented set. The test file tests/encryption/tests/json_tree/blockers.rs asserts 0A000 on documents and entries, in every arity. It also pins that the three array functions still raise natively. That pin confirms the deviation, but it does not satisfy item 3.
[#1439] Documentation that untyped-literal calls are not blocked, and why (Proposal step 4). Met by the new section in packages/eql/docs/reference/json-tree-leakage.md and by the upgrade note U-004.
The motivating query (typed jsonpath and typed jsonb arguments) resolves to the new overload and raises, per the PR evidence.
Evidence limit: the function list in blockers.sql is taken from the repository change summary and the PR description. The overload bodies were not read directly. The summary and the description agree on the function list.
Resolution
Choose one of the following and record the choice on #1439 and in this PR:
(a) Add jsonb_array_elements and jsonb_array_elements_text overloads on both public.eql_v4_json_search and public.eql_v4_json_entry in packages/eql/src/v3/json_tree/blockers.sql. Each takes the domain as first argument, copies the native remaining arguments and defaults, and raises feature_not_supported (0A000) with an EQL alternative. Add both names to the exact-overload-set test and to the blocked-call test in packages/eql/tests/encryption/tests/json_tree/blockers.rs. Keep the documented plain-jsonb ambiguity note.
(b) The owner of #1439 amends the issue to accept the native error for these two functions and for jsonb_array_length. After that amendment, change the PR description and the test that pins the native error so they state that outcome as the accepted requirement. Then reassess this item as PASS.

What was checked:
All 40 overloads in blockers.sql. The 20 on eql_v4_json_search and the 20 on eql_v4_json_entry are consistent with each other.
Each overload copies its native function's argument names, defaults and return type. That includes the OUT columns on jsonb_each and jsonb_each_text, the VARIADIC arguments on jsonb_extract_path*, and the PostgreSQL 18 strip_in_arrays argument.
The REQUIRE on json_tree/functions.sql, CREATE OR REPLACE for reinstall, and the changeset and docs wording.

Cover named vars => calls in the blocked-call matrix.
Every blocked call passes vars positionally. The name-blind checks compare only function names, argument types, and counts, so renaming the vars parameter in a blocker overload leaves every test passing. A named vars => call no longer matches that overload and can resolve to the native jsonb function. Add one named call per jsonpath function and update the expected count.

Update the native-error assertion in
postgres_the_unblocked_array_functions_raise_natively to check a stable
PostgreSQL error code instead of matching the English message prefix, while
preserving verification that all three functions raise natively.
Cover a named path argument in the blocked-call list.
The blocked-call list names only silent and strip_in_arrays. No blocked call names path. Every JSONPATH_FUNCTIONS blocker declares path jsonpath as its second parameter, for both public.eql_v4_json_search and public.eql_v4_json_entry. If one of those parameters were renamed, a path => call would no longer bind to its blocker and would not raise feature_not_supported. No current test would catch that.
Add a path => call to the JSONPATH_FUNCTIONS loop. The loop then adds one call per function per domain, so the expected total in the final assertion must also change. Without that change, the test fails its count check.

public.eql_v4_json_search and public.eql_v4_json_entry are domains over
jsonb, so PostgreSQL's own jsonb functions accept them and run over the
stored envelope: jsonb_path_match(col, ...) returns false for every row,
with no error, and an envelope key such as v returns the envelope's field.
EQL cannot make these calls raise. An overload taking the domain as its
first argument is a second candidate for every call whose first argument
is untyped, so installing EQL would make jsonb_typeof($1) and its kind
ambiguous on plain jsonb across the whole database, and the native
function still wins whenever any other argument is untyped. A base type
of its own would close it, but only a superuser can create one.
The JSON tree leakage reference now says so, and lists what to query with
instead. The new tests pin it against a real sealed document: the
jsonpath functions find nothing on a document or an entry, however their
arguments are written; extraction reads the envelope's keys; the array
functions raise natively; and with EQL installed, a plain-jsonb call with
an untyped first argument still resolves to the native function, with no
overload of a native jsonb function in public.

Summary
EQL v4 stores an encrypted JSON document in a column of type
public.eql_v4_json_search. That type is a PostgreSQL domain overjsonb, so PostgreSQL's ownjsonbfunctions still accept the column, and run over the stored ciphertext envelope instead of the user's document.jsonb_path_match(col, …)returns false for every row, with no error. This PR documents that, and pins it with tests.
