Summary

Small fixes to the manual publish flow (publish:versions / publish:pkg):

  1. publish-single-version.js exited 0 when npm publish failed. The catch only logged, so publish:versions printed "PostgreSQL N published successfully!" after an E403/2FA failure. Now it sets process.exitCode = 1, and publish:versions takes its existing failure path ("Continue with other versions?").
    fake npm that exits 1, run in versions/17:
      main: ❌ Publish failed: Command failed: npm publish --tag pg17 exit=0
      this PR: ❌ Publish failed: Command failed: npm publish --tag pg17 exit=1

  2. The restore rewrote package.json via JSON.stringify and dropped the trailing newline, so every publish left versions/<n>/package.json modified. It now writes back the original bytes, and git status is clean afterwards.
  3. publish-versions.js offered "Promote libpg-query@pg17 to latest?", which would move latest from 18 down to 17. Now it offers this only for the highest major in versions/ (today pg18), and only when that major was published. PUBLISH.md is updated to match.
  4. v17 README: the API note pointed to the retired @libpg-query/parser / ./full. It now points to libpg-query@pg18 for fingerprint/normalize/scan/parsePlPgSQL, and the pg17 row links to /v/pg17 instead of /v/latest.

There are no WASM, template or API changes. v17 keeps its current API: its exports and index.d.ts on main are identical to the published 17.7.4.

📍 Findings outside the diff (3) — 🟠 1 high · 🟡 2 medium — defects on lines GitHub can't attach comments to

🟠 High — Promote to latest offered even when publish failed · publish-versions.js:128–140 · unchanged line

// scripts/publish-versions.js
128	  const latestVersion = versionDirs[0];
129	  if (selectedVersions.includes(latestVersion)) {
130	    console.log('\n🏷️  Tag Management');
131
132	    const promoteVersions = await question(`Promote libpg-query@pg${latestVersion} to latest? (y/N): `);
133	    if (promoteVersions.toLowerCase() === 'y') {
134	      try {
135	        execSync(`npm dist-tag add libpg-query@pg${latestVersion} latest`, { stdio: 'inherit' });
136	        console.log(`✅ libpg-query@pg${latestVersion} promoted to latest`);
137	      } catch (error) {
138	        console.error('❌ Failed to promote tag:', error.message);
139	      }

The latest promotion block runs after the publish loop without tracking which versions actually published, so a failed publish of versions/<latestVersion> still offers npm dist-tag add libpg-query@pg${latestVersion} latest (scripts/publish-versions.js:128). Because the version bump was already committed before the publish attempt, the previously published pgN version still exists on the registry, so the promotion succeeds and repoints latest at the stale build while the new version is absent. Users installing libpg-query@latest silently get the old major/minor instead of an error.

🟡 Medium — Fix stale pg17→latest links in remaining READMEs · versions/18/README.md

The PR corrected the dist-tag table in versions/17/README.md, but the same stale row remains in the other version READMEs (versions/13/README.md:62, versions/14/README.md:62, versions/15/README.md:62, versions/16/README.md:62, versions/18/README.md:64), where the pg17 row still links to https://www.npmjs.com/package/libpg-query/v/latest. Since latest now points to pg18, these links show a pg17 label resolving to the pg18 package, so readers following those READMEs install the wrong major version.

🟡 Medium — Continuing after failed publish still exits 0 · publish-versions.js:117–125 · unchanged line

// scripts/publish-versions.js
117	    } catch (error) {
118	      console.error(`   ❌ Failed to publish PostgreSQL ${version}:`, error.message);
119	      const continuePublish = await question('Continue with other versions? (y/N): ');
120	      if (continuePublish.toLowerCase() !== 'y') {
121	        rl.close();
122	        process.exit(1);
123	      }
124	    }
125	  }

When a version's publish fails and the user chooses to continue, the loop swallows the error and the script falls through to console.log(' ✨ Publishing complete!') and exits 0 (scripts/publish-versions.js:117). Callers such as CI wrappers see success even though one or more versions never reached the registry, and the version-bump commit for the failed version is already in git. This breaks the exit-code plumbing that publish-single-version.js now provides via process.exitCode = 1: execSync throws on the child's nonzero exit, but the orchestrator discards it.

The change makes the multi-version publish script promote the newest version directory to latest instead of hardcoding pg17, and updates the publish guide plus the pg17 README accordingly. The script logic and the docs text are internally consistent (the directory list is sorted descending, so versionDirs[0] is the highest major). Two script-level robustness gaps around failed publishes were flagged, and several sibling READMEs still carry the stale pg17→latest links that the PR fixed only for pg17.

Files Change
scripts/publish-versions.js Promotion target switches from hardcoded pg17 to the highest version directory.
scripts/publish-single-version.js Unchanged in substance; exit-code plumbing referenced by the orchestrator.
PUBLISH.md Publish guide updated to describe highest-major promotion to latest.
versions/17/README.md Dist-tag table updated now that pg17 is no longer latest.
