feat: use npmeta for package name and info handling - #3373
Single-character package searches now correctly retrieve package details.
Stable-only package timelines, including install-size history, now consistently exclude prerelease versions.
Package names and versions are interpreted more consistently across searches, package details, dependencies and comparisons.
Package metadata and dependency information now handle package specifications more consistently.
Create-package install commands now support cases where the suggested short name matches the package name. This applies to npm and Deno install commands.
The project adds npmeta and replaces local package utility implementations with imports from that package across application and server code. Cache parsing now uses npmeta.parsePackageSpec. Timeline stable-version filtering now uses verkit.isStable.
Changes: npmeta utility migration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Add npmeta and replace local utilities package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, shared/utils/*, scripts/generate-fixtures.ts, test/unit/shared/utils/*, test/unit/app/utils/run-command.spec.ts
Adds npmeta and the workspace release-age exclusion. Removes local package-analysis, dependency, binary-detection, and package-spec helpers, along with related tests. The fixture script now imports package-name encoding from npmeta.
Application code imports package-name, dependency, package-spec, and package-classification helpers from npmeta. Package-name splitting also uses npmeta. The create-package specifier check now rejects a short name only when it is null.
Update server utility usage server/api/*, server/utils/*, shared/utils/packument.ts, test/unit/server/utils/*
Server handlers and utilities import package metadata helpers from npmeta. Test setup no longer stubs package-name encoding.
Update cache parsing and timeline filtering modules/runtime/server/cache.ts, server/api/registry/timeline/*
The cache plugin uses parsePackageSpec in both metadata handlers. Timeline stable-only filtering uses verkit.isStable.
Possibly related issues
npmx-dev/npmx.dev#2791: The change replaces the local built-in TypeScript type detection implementation with npmeta.hasBuiltInTypes.
npmx-dev/npmx.dev#2717: Both changes use the package-name splitting contract in route construction.
npmx-dev/npmx.dev#3149: Both changes concern module-format detection, now supplied by npmeta.

The utility migration is mergeable with bounded follow-up to restore the removed module-format regression cases. No current production failure is established.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title states that the pull request uses the npmeta package for package name and package information handling. The changeset does this across many files. It replaces local helpers such as encodePackageName, parsePackageSpec, splitPackageName, normalizeLicense and parseDependencyVersion with imports from npmeta, and it deletes the old implementations. The title names the main change, and it is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description links no issue. It states that the change replaces manual handling of package name and info with npmeta. That statement relates directly to the changeset, which swaps local package-name and package-info helpers for npmeta imports. The template placeholders for context and high-level summary remain unfilled, but the check is lenient and the description is not off-topic.

Restore the fallback-array and .cjs subpath format test.
The PR removes the only unit test for a type: 'module' package whose entry point is a fallback array and whose ./init subpath points to ./dist/init.cjs. That test expects dual.
Module format now comes from npmeta through analyzePackage (shared/utils/package-analysis.ts:309). No remaining unit test covers this input, so a change in the detected format for it would not fail the suite. Add the case back in the analyzePackage block.

Restore a regression test in the `analyzePackage` test block for a package with
`type: 'module'`, a fallback-array root export pointing to a `.js` entry, and a
`./init` subpath pointing to `.cjs`; assert that `moduleFormat` is `dual`.

Thanks for this PR!
Overall, I like to see changes which remove many lines and add way less. In this case, I am a little hesitant tho, because we then depend on one more dependency which is only maintained by you and I therefore have to include a mandatory xkcd in here: https://xkcd.com/2347/
I would like to wait for further feedback / discussion from other maintainers regarding this topic and decide whether such single-man package dependencies are desired.
Regarding the actual changes: They look pretty good overall to me, I created a PR upstream with little validation concerns I found. Once this is released, I would recommend waiting for the minimumReleaseAge of 1 day before merging anything here.
I also left a small follow up on what CodeRabbit found, which I think should be addressed.
Add a regression case for a scoped package matched by its name segment.
The known-package test covers eslint, @types/node and @typescript-eslint/parser. The two scoped cases match through the @types/ and @typescript-eslint/ prefixes, which check the full name. No case checks a scoped package that matches only through its name segment, such as @scope/eslint-config. The name extraction in isKnownDevDependencyPackage changed in this PR, so a regression in that path would not fail any test. Adding one scoped case covers it:
