Add a shared Playground preview workflow and comment action - #15
Adds a shared "Playground preview" workflow. Every pull request gets one comment with links that open the pull request's build in WordPress Playground, a throwaway WordPress in the browser, plus a link to download the zip. A plugin repo adds one short caller file and, if it wants more than the default, a blueprint file.
Why
Reviewers and testers should not have to build a plugin to try a pull request. One click gives them a running site with the change installed.
One setup for every plugin. The "building" comment, the zip build, the finished comment and the "failed" comment live here once. A fix reaches every plugin that calls it.
What is specific to a plugin lives in the plugin. The landing page, theme, extra plugins, sample data and WP-CLI steps go in the plugin's own blueprint files, not in workflow inputs. Each blueprint file is one link in the comment. A repo with none gets a default blueprint that works for any plugin: install the zip, activate it, turn on debug.
Nothing new is hosted. The blueprint travels in the link itself (base64 in the URL hash), and the zip goes to the packaging bucket the repo already uses.
The comment never lies. A pending job replaces the old comment with "building" at once, and a failed job replaces "building" when anything fails.
What changed
.github/workflows/playground-preview.yml is the reusable workflow with four jobs: pending, zip, button and failed. The zip job calls the shared pup zip workflow. It is skipped when the caller passes zip-url.
.github/actions/playground-preview/ is a composite action. playground-preview.js loads the blueprints, checks them, builds the links and writes or updates the comment. It has its own README.
templates/workflows/playground-preview.yml is a caller to copy into a plugin repo.
templates/playground/ has two example blueprints: a plain one, and one with an extra plugin and WP-CLI steps.
tests/actions/playground-preview/ has the unit tests and fixtures.
Inputs: blueprints, php-version, i18n, additional-commands, zip-url, zip-link-base, runs-on, time-zone. concurrency stays in the caller, because a called workflow would evaluate it with the caller's context.
Blueprint files:{{ZIP_URL}} is replaced with the zip's link. Every blueprint has to use it. Any other {{NAME}} in capitals fails the run, so a typo does not reach Playground. meta.title is the link's label and meta.description is a short note. meta is removed before the link is built.
Secrets are passed one by one.secrets: inherit only works inside one organization. The workflow checks them early and fails with a clear message instead of an upload error deep in the build.
Size guard: a comment can hold 65,536 characters. When the links would make it longer, the run fails and names each link's length.
Build:.puprc is the one place that says how the plugin is built. additional-commands is a second place, so prefer .puprc.
Marker:<!-- playground-preview:<owner>/<repo> -->, so two repos never share a comment.
Callers must grant permissions
A called workflow cannot get more than the caller gives it. The caller needs contents: read and pull-requests: write. Pull requests from forks get no preview: their runs cannot see the secrets.
After this merges
Nothing else to do here. This repository publishes no releases, so callers use @main. Every merge to main reaches every user on the next run.
The workflow calls its own action with uses: $/.github/actions/playground-preview. GitHub added this self-repository reference in July 2026: $/ is this repository at the exact commit that runs the workflow, with no ref and no checkout. So the action always comes from the same commit as the workflow, whichever ref the caller used. It needs a runner of version 2.336.0 or newer. The pending and failed jobs run on ubuntu-latest, which has it. The job that posts the links runs on the caller's runs-on, so that runner has to be new enough (Blacksmith's is 2.338.1 today). The newest actionlint (1.7.12) does not know the syntax yet, so the lint job in the Plugin Check PR ignores that one error, only for a $/ reference.
Test plan
node --test: 255 tests pass, including the new ones.
actionlint passes on the workflow and the template.
The example blueprints pass Playground's own schema.
A real run in a fork with zip-url (no bucket secrets): Zip is skipped, the comment shows two links and a zip link, and a decoded link has the right landing page, theme and install step.
A real run in a fork with no zip-url and no secrets: the secrets check fails in seconds and names the missing secrets, Zip is skipped, and the comment says "failed". zip waits for pending, so a missing secret no longer costs a full build.
A real run that builds and uploads the zip. Needs the bucket secrets, so it has to be done in a repo that has them.
Open a generated link in a browser.
The same shared workflow, called from a fork with the PR branch as its ref, loads its action through $/ from the same commit and posts the comment.
Not checked
The exact check names for the nested zip job.
A pull request from a fork into the real repository.
Callers must update a required status check: a job in a reusable workflow reports as <caller job id> / <job name>.
GitHub started the shared zip workflow with empty values for the secrets it marks as required, so the early secrets check in pending is the only guard.
Run it locally: node .github/actions/playground-preview/playground-preview.js --zip-url <url> [blueprint.json ...] prints the comment. See the action's README.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Pull requests from the same repository can now receive WordPress Playground previews with build-status updates and links to launch the plugin.
Previews support standard, sample-data, and custom setups. Providing an existing ZIP URL skips building a plugin package.
Custom blueprints can offer alternate setups, including sample orders and additional plugins. Pull requests from forks do not receive previews.

Walkthrough
This change adds a reusable GitHub Actions workflow and composite action for WordPress Playground previews. The workflow builds a development ZIP or uses a supplied URL, processes blueprint files into Playground links, and publishes pull-request comments with building, ready, or failed status.
Changes: Playground Preview
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Blueprint preparation and links .github/actions/playground-preview/playground-preview.js, .github/actions/playground-preview/blueprints/*, templates/playground/*, tests/actions/playground-preview/fixtures/*, tests/actions/playground-preview/playground-preview.test.js
Adds default and sample blueprints. The script validates blueprint JSON and placeholders, prepares variants, and encodes them in Playground URLs. Tests cover blueprint validation and link generation.
Comment action and local execution .github/actions/playground-preview/action.yml, .github/actions/playground-preview/playground-preview.js, tests/actions/playground-preview/playground-preview.test.js
Adds action inputs and comment generation for building, ready, and failed states. The action updates a comment with a matching marker or creates one. The script also supports local comment generation.
Reusable workflow and caller setup .github/workflows/playground-preview.yml, templates/workflows/playground-preview.yml, .github/actions/playground-preview/README.md
Adds jobs for pending status, optional ZIP creation, ready links, and failure status. Adds a pull-request caller workflow and documents workflow inputs, permissions, prerequisites, and blueprint rules.

@main resolves the action from the main ref, not from the commit running this reusable workflow. When main does not contain the new action, all three status posts fail to load it. The ./ form is also unsuitable because it resolves against the caller's checked-out workspace. Use the self-repository reference instead.

@coderabbitai About the "use the self-repository action reference" finding (outside the diff): I did not change this one. uses: takes no expressions and needs a written ref. I checked with actionlint: $/.github/actions/playground-preview is rejected for a missing ref, and ${{ github.repository }} or ${{ github.sha }} in uses: give "context is not allowed here". ./ resolves against the caller, which is why the full path is used. So the action cannot point at the commit that runs the workflow, and @main stays. The workflow comment and the PR description both say callers use @main. Please resolve this finding.
@pauloiankoski I withdraw the requirement to change these references. The full stellarwp/plugin-toolbox/.github/actions/playground-preview@main reference is valid, and the workflow documents that choice. No code change is required for this finding.
One technical correction: GitHub’s current documentation supports $/.github/actions/playground-preview. It resolves against the reusable workflow’s repository at its running commit, without an explicit ref. It is not available on GitHub Enterprise Server. Your actionlint result therefore does not establish that GitHub rejects this syntax. citeturn403556search0
The finding is in the review summary, not an inline review thread. There is no corresponding GitHub thread to resolve; I am marking the finding as withdrawn.

Learning: In stellarwp/plugin-toolbox, GitHub Actions consumers intentionally use major-version tags such as @v1, never @main. Breaking changes ship under a new major tag such as @v2. The repository also intentionally references third-party actions by version tag, including actions/checkout@v6 and actions/github-script@v9. The copyable template templates/workflows/release-prep.yml demonstrates this policy. Do not require SHA pinning in an individual workflow; a move to SHA pinning requires a repository-wide policy change.
Correction to my earlier comment about the self-repository reference: I was wrong that uses: cannot point at the running commit. GitHub added uses: $/path in July 2026 (changelog). actionlint 1.7.12 does not know it yet, which is why it reported an error. I tested it for real: a reusable workflow in this repository, called from another repository, loaded its action from this repository at the commit of the called workflow, on a GitHub runner (2.338.2). The three action references in this PR now use $/.github/actions/playground-preview (7e5b769), and a run in a fork with the PR branch as the workflow ref loaded the action from that same commit. It needs runner 2.336.0 or newer, which Blacksmith has (2.338.1).
