Fix AB-BA deadlock between DockerClientFactory and RyukResourceReaper - #12133
Fixes an AB-BA monitor deadlock between DockerClientFactory.client() and RyukResourceReaper.maybeStart() when running tests in parallel (e.g. with JUnit 5).
Root Cause
Under concurrent test execution (such as GenericContainer and ComposeContainer starting simultaneously):
Thread 1 calls DockerClientFactory.client(), acquiring DockerClientFactory. (Lock A). Line 245 invokes ResourceReaper.instance().init() -> maybeStart(), attempting to acquire the monitor on RyukResourceReaper.this (Lock B).
Thread 2 calls RyukResourceReaper.registerLabelsFilterForCleanup() -> maybeStart(), acquiring RyukResourceReaper.this (Lock B). Line 78 calls ryukContainer.start(), which calls DockerClientFactory.instance().client(), attempting to acquire DockerClientFactory. (Lock A).
Result: Thread 1 holds Lock A and waits for Lock B, while Thread 2 holds Lock B and waits for Lock A.
Fix
In RyukResourceReaper.maybeStart(), call DockerClientFactory.instance().client()before acquiring synchronized (this). This enforces a strict total lock ordering (\ < B$): DockerClientFactory. is always acquired and released prior to acquiring the Ryuk monitor. Any racing thread will wait on Lock A without holding Lock B, eliminating the circular dependency.
Testing
Added regression tests in RyukResourceReaperDeadlockTest:
shouldNotHoldReaperLockWhenCallingDockerClientFactory: Asserts via Thread.holdsLock(reaper) that the reaper monitor is never held during Docker client lookup.
concurrentCallersShouldNotDeadlockUnderContention: Exercises 8 concurrent worker threads racing across reaper calls without deadlocks or timeouts.
Under JUnit 5 parallel test execution, threads initializing GenericContainer
and ComposeContainer could deadlock due to an inverted lock acquisition order:
- Worker 1: DockerClientFactory.$LOCK -> RyukResourceReaper.this
- Worker 2: RyukResourceReaper.this -> DockerClientFactory.$LOCK
By resolving DockerClientFactory.instance().client() outside the synchronized
block in RyukResourceReaper.maybeStart(), we enforce a strict global lock
hierarchy where DockerClientFactory is always initialized prior to acquiring
the Ryuk monitor, eliminating the cyclic dependency.

Walkthrough
Ryuk startup now initializes the Docker client before entering the synchronized startup sequence. It records readiness after the initial Ryuk acknowledgement. New tests cover failure propagation and concurrent callers.

Docker client initialization and single-start guard core/src/main/java/org/testcontainers/utility/RyukResourceReaper.java, core/src/test/java/org/testcontainers/RyukResourceReaperDeadlockTest.java
maybeStart initializes the Docker client before synchronization and checks a readiness flag before and inside the synchronized block. It sets readiness after the initial Ryuk acknowledgement. Tests check that a simulated client failure propagates without holding the reaper monitor and that eight concurrent callers finish within five seconds.

Explanation
[#9120] Objective: prevent the AB-BA deadlock between DockerClientFactory.client() (monitor A) and RyukResourceReaper.maybeStart() (monitor B).
Code at head (core/.../RyukResourceReaper.java): maybeStart() returns early when volatile ready is true. It then calls DockerClientFactory.instance().client() before synchronized (this). Only after that call returns normally does the thread enter synchronized (this). Ryuk startup, including ryukContainer.start(), runs inside the B block. ready is set only after the Ryuk ACK latch completes.
Why the reported cycle is no longer reachable at head:
DockerClientFactory.client() (@Synchronized, core/.../DockerClientFactory.java) returns the cached client when client != null. It calls ResourceReaper.instance().init() only on first creation. client is assigned before init() runs, and init() runs while the creating thread holds A.
A thread enters B only after its preliminary client() call returns normally. A normal return means client was non-null. In the code at head, client is assigned only inside client(), and a failure throws before the B block.
A thread that holds A and reaches init() -> maybeStart() needs client == null. Such a thread is the creator. It re-enters B on its own thread, so no other thread can hold B at that time.
Threads that hold B call client() during ryukContainer.start(). Those calls need A only briefly and do not wait for B. No thread that holds A waits for B in that state.
The previous FAIL assumed that a thread could call init() while holding A after another thread had completed its client() call. That needs client == null after a successful client() return. The early return in client() rules this out.
Tests: the summary of RyukResourceReaperDeadlockTest states that both tests simulate a cached DockerClientFactory failure. Those tests therefore may not reach the Ryuk start path. This limits regression evidence. The issue does not request automated tests, so this does not change the requirement verdict.
Limits: the incremental diff from the previous reviewed head was unavailable. This verdict relies on the full head file and the supplied summaries. The test file at head was not re-read.

Explanation
Changes relate to #9120. In RyukResourceReaper.java, the changes are limited to the maybeStart() startup path: the volatile ready flag, the pre-lock DockerClientFactory.instance().client() call, and the narrowed synchronized (this) block. The new RyukResourceReaperDeadlockTest supports the deadlock fix. The summaries report no unrelated behavior change, no declaration changes, and no other source files in scope. The incremental diff could not be read, so this verdict relies on the head file and the supplied summaries.

fillInStackTrace() records the lock state while simulatedFailure is constructed, before reaper.registerLabelsFilterForCleanup(...) invokes DockerClientFactory.client(). The cached exception is then thrown directly, so the callback is not invoked during the client call. The assertion therefore passes with either lock ordering.
The contention test also uses the cached failure, so client() throws immediately and does not exercise a blocked client call. Block inside client() with a test-controlled strategy or latch, then inspect the worker's locked monitors while it is blocked. Do not synchronize on dockerClientFactory itself; @Synchronized uses a Lombok-generated private lock.

Update maybeStart so its fast-path check evaluates a separate volatile
readiness flag rather than started. The readiness flag is set only after
Ryuk startup and readiness acknowledgment complete, ensuring concurrent
threads do not return prematurely before Ryuk is operational.
Retain started as the start-once guard inside the monitor so startup
failures preserve existing behavior.
