A11Y-13878: Scan Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone for accessibility - #311
Runs accessibility scans in-page on mobile browsers: Chrome on Android, and Safari on iPhone (iPad excluded). Today the service turns accessibility off for any session with a deviceName.
Build start: reads isMobileScanningEnabledForGroup and isIosSafariScanningEnabledForGroup into env in the launcher, so workers inherit them. iOS is on unless the backend sends false (prod doesn't send the iOS flag yet).
validateCapsWithA11y: allows Chrome on Android, and Safari on iPhone, when the group has mobile scanning. Works out the platform from the device name when session caps report the Appium host OS.
Scan, results, results-summary and save scripts get is_mobile_session and thTestRunUuid on mobile, in both the classic and CLI flows. A rejected mobile save is logged as an error.
Sets the async script timeout on mobile sessions to the backend's scannerProcessingTimeout from build start (30s when it isn't sent, as in the Node SDK). Appium XCUITest starts iOS sessions with a ~0 ms timeout, so every scan timed out before this.
Tested on prod with WDIO 9.29.1 and a packed build of this branch:
The script timeout was 30000 ms in each run, from the backend's scannerProcessingTimeout: "30". Before the timeout fix, the iPhone run logged Timed out waiting for asyncrhonous script result after 7 ms on every scan. The v8 port is #312.

Accessibility Automation now scans Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone sessions.
Release notes (internal):(required — engineer-facing; what actually changed / why)
In-page mobile web accessibility scans for Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone (iPad excluded), gated on the group's build-start flags; iOS is on unless the backend sends isIosSafariScanningEnabledForGroup: false.
Mobile scan, results and save scripts receive is_mobile_session and thTestRunUuid in the classic and CLI flows.
Mobile sessions get the backend's scannerProcessingTimeout as their async script timeout, to work around Appium XCUITest's ~0 ms default on iOS.

Chrome on Android, and Safari on iPhone for the iOS cohort, can't load
the accessibility extension, so their scans run in the page. Allow
those sessions when the group has mobile scanning, read the mobile and
iOS group flags from build start, and pass is_mobile_session and
thTestRunUuid to the scan, results and save scripts in both the classic
and CLI flows.

Prod build start doesn't send isIosSafariScanningEnabledForGroup yet, so a
missing flag no longer turns iOS off; only an explicit false does.
Appium XCUITest starts iOS sessions with a ~0 ms async script timeout, so
every executeAsync scan timed out. Set a 30s script timeout once a session
is identified as mobile, in both the classic and CLI flows.

The service now accepts eligible Android Chrome and iPhone Safari sessions for Accessibility Automation scanning. It passes mobile-specific arguments to scan and result scripts, configures mobile script timeouts, and logs rejected mobile save results.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9183e
Eligible mobile scans may be rejected after bin-session startup or time out after a session reload. Resolve those paths before merging; also preserve users’ configured script timeouts.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9183e
The visible changes remain bounded to mobile test sessions and retain group-level eligibility checks. One compatibility concern remains: the scanner timeout replaces the session timeout used by unrelated asynchronous scripts. Enforcement of the new run identifiers by the remotely supplied scripts could not be confirmed.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: The scanner processing timeout now replaces the shared WebDriver session script timeout without preserving the caller’s setting or restoring it. If the scanner timeout is shorter, subsequent unrelated asynchronous scripts can fail earlier, allowing scanner configuration to affect the rest of the mobile test session. Desktop sessions are excluded, and increasing near-zero iOS timeouts is the intended benefit.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new exposure is execution of accessibility scripts on eligible mobile-session pages and submission or retrieval of their results. Local eligibility is group-gated. The available source does not establish the maximum independently attackable server-side data scope because script and backend identity enforcement are unavailable.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — CLI scan execution retains its accessibility gate, and after-test saves require stored scan metadata. Mobile argument construction does not itself authenticate the supplied run UUID. Whether remotely supplied scripts reject missing or mismatched run and session identities remains an external contract gap rather than a verified vulnerability.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — A mobile save returning success:false is now surfaced as an error in both flows. This improves failure visibility, but the new helper only logs rejection; it does not add retry, rollback, or durable completion tracking.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define and verify the external mobile-script contract for binding run identifiers to the authenticated session, including missing and mismatched identifiers. Separately, document entitlement authority when child responses omit capabilities so rollout behavior does not depend on undocumented response repetition.

Use the build-start scannerProcessingTimeout capability for the mobile
script timeout, as the Node SDK does, instead of a fixed 30s. Fall back to
30s when the backend doesn't send it.

Reapply the mobile script timeout after session reload.
browser.reloadSession() creates a new session. The classic handler sets the mobile async script timeout only in before(). The replacement Appium XCUITest session can therefore use its near-zero default, causing later accessibility scans to time out.
Reapply setMobileA11yScriptTimeout in both AccessibilityHandler.onSessionReload and AccessibilityModule.onSessionReload. Await the operation before post-reload scans run.

processAccessibilityResponse is the only code that converts build-start capabilities into the environment variables used by mobile eligibility and timeout logic. The current fixture contains only accessibilityToken and scannerVersion, and the mobile tests set those environment variables directly.
Add response-driven cases for:
An absent mobile flag, which sets mobile scanning to 'false' while leaving iOS scanning enabled by default.
Mobile values true, 'true', and false.
An iOS value of false, which sets the iOS environment variable to 'false'.
A present scannerProcessingTimeout, which sets BSTACK_A11Y_SCANNER_PROCESSING_TIMEOUT.

Preserve the launcher entitlement when the bin response omits it.
StartBinSessionResponse permits a capabilities list without isMobileScanningEnabledForGroup. The CLI passes the missing value to isTrue, which returns false, and overwrites the launcher flag inherited by the worker. validateCapsWithA11y then rejects supported Android Chrome and iPhone Safari sessions.
Only update the environment flag when the bin response includes the capability. An explicit false still overrides the inherited value.

Kept it for now: this file is generated by the changeset-from-pr workflow from the PR's Release section, and it re-commits it on every push unless the PR has the skip-changeset label. It is also what gets this feature the minor bump in the next Version Packages release (every PR into main ships one, e.g. #308, #310). If you want it out, should we add skip-changeset and handle the version bump another way?

Workers re-run this when they connect to the bin session (cli/index.ts:462). If that response doesn't include isMobileScanningEnabledForGroup, this overwrites the launcher's true with false and mobile scans get skipped. Can we guard it with !== undefined like the iOS flag below?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This only runs in before(). After browser.reloadSession(), the new iOS session is back to the ~0 ms timeout and every scan times out again. Can we also call setMobileA11yScriptTimeout from onSessionReload, here and in accessibilityModule.ts?
