feat(device-pairing): pair phones and browsers with a QR code - #461
Settings → Account gains "Connect a device", a paired-devices list and a remote access headers editor, so a phone or another browser can sign in without typing a password and can pass a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare Access.
Pairing
One-time codes (3 min TTL) minted by a Better Auth plugin, redeemed into a new session that records the device name and user agent.
POST /api/device-pairing/links builds an ocm://link app link and a browser /pair link. The app link carries the stored headers as repeated h=Name:Value parameters.
Loopback and plain-HTTP origins are blocked or warned about, and the QR is blurred until revealed because it contains the header values.
Remote access headers
Stored encrypted, returned by name only, and validated at the boundary: at most 8 headers, 512-character values, 1800 encoded characters so the link fits a QR code, and transport names such as cookie, host and x-forwarded-* rejected.
A Cloudflare Access preset fills CF-Access-Client-Id and CF-Access-Client-Secret.
Sign-in and revocation
Login offers "Sign in with QR code", and /pair redeems a scanned code, returning to the requested page through the same redirect handling as the other sign-in methods.
Revoking a device deletes its session, closes its live connections and removes its push subscriptions; the current session cannot be revoked.
Validation
pnpm typecheck: clean
pnpm lint: 0 errors (41 pre-existing warnings)
pnpm test: CLI 503, backend 4223, frontend 3775, all passing
pnpm build: succeeds
Not included
The mobile app side of the link format and header replay is not in this repository.
Device pairing codes and captured sessions live in the Manager database; a code minted before a restart still works, but a revoked device's live sockets are closed only on the running instance.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Sign in by scanning a QR code or opening a device-pairing link. Pairing codes expire and can only be used once.
Generate browser and mobile-app pairing links, and manage paired devices in account settings, including signing out other devices.
Configure remote-access headers for protected app connections, including Cloudflare Access credentials.
View device names, sign-in times, and current-device status for active sessions.
Opt in to private-network HTTP pairing links, with warnings when a link may be unavailable or insecure.
Bug Fixes
Push subscriptions are updated for the active session and removed when that session is revoked.
Active connections now close when their session ends, and loopback redirects work across more local addresses.
Settings -> Account gets "Connect a device", a paired-devices list, and a
remote access headers editor, so the mobile app and other browsers can sign
in without typing a password and pass a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Registers active connections by session and closes them when sessions end. Stores session IDs with push subscriptions and deletes subscriptions for revoked sessions.
Adds QR scanning to login and a pairing page that redeems codes through the auth context.
Pairing-link and QR settings frontend/src/components/settings/ConnectDeviceDialog.tsx, frontend/src/components/settings/ConnectDeviceSettings.tsx, frontend/src/components/settings/PairingQrCode.tsx, frontend/src/components/settings/QrCodeScanner.tsx, frontend/src/components/settings/AccountSettings.tsx
Adds pairing-link controls, QR display and refresh, and a private-network HTTP preference.
The stale subscription-registration risk is addressed. The remaining issues are bounded repository-guideline violations, but the prohibited comments and test-helper type should be corrected.

Replace the any type arguments on app with a generic environment parameter.
app: Hono<any, any, any> turns off type checking for options.app. The repository rule "Use of any type without justification" applies, and the declaration gives no justification. Making the options interface generic over Env keeps typed apps assignable without any. The register callback must use the same Hono<E> type, and the function must be generic so E is inferred from each caller's app.
♻️ Proposed fix
-import type { Hono } from 'hono'+import type { Env, Hono } from 'hono'
import type { UpgradeWebSocket } from 'hono/ws'
-export async function startWebSocketServer(options: StartWebSocketServerOptions): Promise<WebSocketTestServer> {+export async function startWebSocketServer<E extends Env = Env>(+ options: StartWebSocketServerOptions<E>,+): Promise<WebSocketTestServer> {
The call createNodeWebSocket({ app: options.app }) on line 25 must accept Hono<E>. Check that parameter type in @hono/node-ws before changing the signature.

Update StartWebSocketServerOptions and startWebSocketServer to use a generic Env
parameter inferred from options.app; type app and the register callback
consistently as Hono<E>, replacing the any arguments. Ensure the
createNodeWebSocket call remains compatible with Hono<E>.

A rejected dynamic import left the pairing dialog blank forever. The
renderer now loads through async/await with a catch and renders an error
instead of nothing when the chunk cannot be fetched.
…t cannot pair
A loopback origin in production or plain HTTP on a public address still
minted a code and showed a browser QR no other device could use.
- one availability rule decides untrusted, loopback and public plain-HTTP
origins; POST /api/device-pairing/links checks it before minting
- GET /api/device-pairing/availability reports the rule for the page origin
without minting
- Connect a device disables "Show QR code" and explains the fix when the
address cannot pair
- private-network plain HTTP keeps the browser QR; the app QR still needs
the toggle
…th adapter
The admin password reset and the first-user check read and wrote the
Better Auth tables with raw SQL, so session delete hooks never ran on the
reset path.
- the admin is found with findUserByEmail and its credential account is
updated by id with the configured password hasher
- sessions are removed with deleteUserSessions, which runs the session
delete hooks
- a missing credential account logs a warning instead of updating nothing
- /api/auth-info/config counts users through the adapter
…hare URL helpers
The admin password reset finds the admin case-insensitively and deletes the push subscriptions of the sessions it ends. The app re-sends its push subscription once per signed-in session so revoke reaches re-signed-in devices, and the upsert keeps the stored device name. Plain-HTTP and URL parsing checks are shared helpers.

Prevent an accepted stale request from committing after a session change.
requireAuth runs only once. If the old request passes it before logout and remains in await c.req.json(), it can later call saveSubscription with the old session. A newer session can save first, and the endpoint upsert then replaces the newer session_id with the old one. Serialize these requests or discard an older request before it commits.

POST /subscribe re-checks the registering auth session inside the same synchronous transaction as the upsert, so a request accepted before a logout cannot restore a revoked session_id over a newer registration. A stale request gets 401, which the session sync already tolerates.
