What: Implements the React main prerelease portion of FELT-143, following the verified trusted-publishing setup on felt-v1.

Merge hold — npm configuration required

Do not merge until npm trusted publishers are configured for all 11 public packages and I confirm configuration is complete.

I will configure the trusted publishers after this PR is approved, close to the intended merge time. npm requires each new trusted publisher to complete its first successful publication within two days, so this avoids using up that window during review.

Each package will trust GitHub organization patternfly, repository patternfly-react, workflow release.yml, with no environment restriction and direct npm publish enabled. This includes the ten public @patternfly/react-* packages and eslint-plugin-patternfly-react.

Implementation

  • Upgrade Lerna to ^9.0.7 for OIDC support and regenerate the Yarn lockfile.
  • Grant the release deploy job id-token: write and install [email protected], retaining Node 22.
  • Remove npm-token authentication from the release workflow and script.
  • Add repository metadata to react-styles for npm provenance.
  • Preserve Lerna failures through the tee logging pipeline, including partial-publication failures.
  • Ignore generated Nx workspace state/cache used internally by Lerna, and exclude workspace metadata from formatting.

Existing prerelease versioning, the prerelease npm tag, and GitHub authentication remain in place.

Testing

  • Immutable installation, ESM/CJS builds, subpath and single-package generation, UMD builds, and demo build passed.
  • 396 unit-test suites passed in the full run; the remaining Timestamp suite passed on rerun with the repository’s TZ=EST setting.
  • Mocked release success, no-change, failure, and partial-failure checks passed.
  • Isolated version-only rehearsal selected all 11 public packages and generated prerelease versions/changelogs without commits, tags, pushes, or publication.
  • Formatting, shell syntax, and diff checks passed.

Actual OIDC publication and provenance will be verified in upstream Actions after merge.

Additional issues: This PR enables trusted publishing for automated prereleases through release.yml. Stable publication through the separate promote.yml workflow will be migrated next. The Core repository portion of FELT-143 also remains outstanding.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved release publishing reliability: failures are reported clearly and stop the release process.
    • Updated release automation to use more restricted permissions and avoid passing an npm token to the deployment step.
    • Excluded generated workspace cache files from version control and formatting.
    • Added repository information to package metadata.

Walkthrough

The release changes update Lerna and package metadata, adjust Nx-related ignore rules, and modify deployment permissions and npm setup. The release script no longer writes NPM_TOKEN to ~/.npmrc and exits with status 1 when the Lerna publish pipeline fails.

Changes

Lerna release pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workspace and package metadata
package.json, packages/react-styles/package.json, .gitignore, .prettierignore
The root Lerna dependency changes to ^9.0.7. The react-styles package adds repository metadata. Ignore rules exclude the root Nx directory and its workspace data.
Release setup and publish handling
.github/workflows/release.yml, .github/release.sh
The deploy job sets explicit permissions, installs npm 11.21.1, and prints Node.js and npm versions. The deploy step no longer receives NPM_TOKEN. The release script removes the ~/.npmrc token write and exits with status 1 if the Lerna publish pipeline fails.

Major · Security & Privacy · Heavy lift

Keep the publish identity out of dependency setup.

id-token: write applies to the whole deploy job. The earlier yarn install --immutable step runs the root postinstall script. If code executed during setup is compromised, it can request the same OIDC identity used to publish the trusted packages. Move setup and build to a job without id-token: write, then publish prepared artifacts in a separate job. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
